Fire and Carbon Monoxide Safety

Do you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home?

Good morning. This is Dr. Joe Cincotta. During my career as a physician I have witnessed a number of tragedies that I feel could have been avoided with better attention to safety. Two areas that have had a particularly strong impact on me are the value of smoke detectors and of carbon monoxide detectors. I have had the unfortunate experience to care for members of families who have experienced loss as a result of fire and of carbon monoxide. We have reliable and inexpensive tools at our disposal to reduce or eliminate loss of life from both fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. However, success is dependent on us using these tools and insuring their proper operation. I am asking you to take these measures seriously. Take the time to either install or to insure the good working order of both of these devices in your own home. Make a note to do it this week, if not today. Please do not wait for a problem to occur, and please do not think that this type of tragedy cannot happen to you. Finally, if you have a son or daughter going off to college this fall be sure that their residence is equipped with these devices and that they are working properly. Thanks for your help in staying healthy and safe.
